Incognito is an independent Lebanese company dedicated to the production, licensing and distribution of music and other cultural products, mainly films and books. It has succeeded in setting up the first pan-Arab network for the distribution of alternative cultural products.
The artistic scene in the Arab countries is clearly dominated by a few large-scale production companies, which are solely concerned with the production and promotion of commercial products. And this difficult situation is furthermore complicated by the fact that there is no serious public support for cultural productions, in most of these countries.
Incognito is a sister company of Lebanese independent music shop La CD-Thèque. Ever since its creation in 1996, La CD-Thèque has offered serious music lovers a space in which they could satisfy their craving for thoughtful music. It naturally attracted many young Lebanese musicians and eventually started to produce, distribute and promote their work. La CD-Thèque has thrived and developed, and become a major actor on the alternative cultural scene, expanding its productions to cover not only music but also movies and books.
Incognito was created in 2004 to handle the rapidly growing production activity, extend it to neighboring countries, and create the first pan-Arab distribution network for alternative cultural products.
Mission statement: Music from the region, for the region.
Incognito mostly produces and distributes artists that live and work in their native countries, and who wish to remain authentic to their roots. Their art is the product of their direct cultural environments as well as the culture they have gathered by getting in touch with the work of artists from all over the world. But they desire to remain anchored in their part of the world, and their work reflects the problems and social conditions of the region with a lot of sincerity.
Even the very few of our artists who are currently living in other parts of the world consider themselves from this region, keeping very strong physical and mental ties with their homelands, and their whole art and thinking revolves around this identity.
Incognito’s artists do not voluntarily try to make their music accessible to other cultures. But we believe that it is only when an artist is really honest with himself and remains true to his beliefs, that he will touch on something universal, that any person with an open mind will relate to, anywhere in the world, through the distances and despite geography.
So whether you are from Oriental descent and miss the smell of your homeland, or just a person who believes in discovering other cultures and finding out the common grounds between all of us humans, your journey starts here.
