Masar is a quartet that brings together some of the most talented Egyptian musicians of the younger generation: Hazim Shaheen on the oud, Nawar Abbessi on the piano, and Hani Bdeir on oriental percussion; they are joined by Miles Jay, an American contrabass player residing in Cairo. The album mainly showcases Hazim Shaheen’s unique compositional talents, with Nawar and Miles contributing a tune each. Under a clear oriental direction, nuances of western classical music and jazz add subtle layers and depth to the sound of Masar. This first album is a remarkable synthesis of the diverse styles and personalities of these four accomplished young musicians.
