Echoes From a Past
Classical Oriental | Lebanon | 2004
Bassem Rizk is a talented Lebanese oud player. ‘Echoes from the Past’ is his first solo album, and prominently displays the influence of the Iraki school of oud players, most notable of which is Munir Bashir, a major inspiration on Bassem’s work, as well as Naseer Shamma. Shamma is part of the new school of Iraki players, one that favors structural composition over improvisation (taqâsîm), and this tendency can also be found in Bassem’s work. The album features improvisations, original compositions and some virtuoso performances that reflect the talent of this multi-prize winner.
