Many musicians around the world are exploring the fusion of musical cultures, yet Myriade charts new territory with its unique two-piano quintet configuration. In searching for a way to combine traditional Middle Eastern instruments with the piano, pianist Ramzi Moufarej started working with oud, saz, nay player and classical flutist Bassam Saba. Moufarej’s encounter with French pianist Frédérique Trunk also resulted in a two-piano project, and the three musicians ended up combining their previous sonic explorations to form a trio. Myriade’s texture was enhanced by the addition of percussions and a cello, which completed the band’s evolution into a quintet.
