Arabic Lieder
Classical | Syria | 2008
The innovative project “Arabic Lieder” features Dima Orsho & Gazwan Zerikly performing Arabic poetry put to music, as well as some solo piano pieces.
The roots of this novel concept go back to 19th century Europe, to what was referred to in the Germanic language as ‘Lieder’, meaning songs (plural of ‘Lied’, song). This art form, which consists of a short poem generally sung with the accompaniment of the piano, started in the 18th century. It is most prominent in the work of Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828), as well as German composer Robert Schumann, while many classical artists experimented in this domain (Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Beethoven…).
Taking into consideration Gazwan and Dima’s artistic activities and interests during their study years, as well as their professional career, this experiment comes as inevitable… Although it might well seem like an adventurous project, it is most definitely a necessary one.
