Born in Lebanon in 1967, composer Zad Moultaka has been conducting a personal research about the musical language for quite a few years now. He seeks to integrate fundamental contemporary composition notions to the specific characteristics of Arabic music, a research that borders on many fields of experimentation…
A slow process of maturation of a form of expression has resulted, since 2003, in a series of works of progressively amplified production. From choral works to ensemble music, from chamber music to solo vocal music, from sound installations to choreography…
Today, Zad’s catalogue features around a hundred works.
And this album combines various vocal pieces, written between 2003 & 2007: La Scala del cielo, Enluminures, Neb Ankh, Khat, Visions, Zikr... Most of them have been performed by Joël Suhubiette’s chamber choir « les éléments », and showcase the fruitful artistic relationships between composer and interpreter.
The texts, sung in various languages – French, Italian, Latin, … -, are taken from the Ancient Egyptians’ Book of The Dead, poems by George Schehadé, an imaginary sarcophagus, and anonymous or unknown poets…
