Presentation of three instrumental waṣla-s, or essential performance sequences realized according to the Eastern Arab art music tradition. Each waṣla is built on a mode-maqām – here Bayyātī, Ḥijāz, and Rāst – and enfolds the improvisatory performance of celebrated instrumental compositions which are part of the restorative musical current of the tradition and which appeared in Egypt and the Levant at the end of the nineteenth century (the epoch known as the Nahḍa or Arab cultural Renaissance). Also included are entirely improvised taqsīm-s and concerted responsorial forms which alternate fixed ritornellos with improvised phrases.
